Wilier road bikes are famous for their front ends. Our integrated head tube and fork designs equate to unrivaled steerability for confident cornering and descending. The oversized, squared profile that characterizes our fork crowns and that flows into the base of our head tubes maximizes strength and stability at a key fulcrum point.

BB 386

The BB386EVO system takes the oversized bottom bracket design concept, which was successfully introduced by Wilier Triestina in the Cento1 model and subsequent variations, to its next evolution. To obtain an unprecedented stiffness at a crucial point of the frame, we have devised an innovative system that can perfectly incorporate an ultra-stiff crank into an ultra-stiff frame. The traditional BB30 system proved inadequate because it requires a frame with a 68 mm box, which is too narrow to deliver the degree of stiffness that we wanted. With this in mind, we developed the new standard BB386EVO in collaboration with FSA, which pairs a carbon crank with a longer 30 mm spindle and a wider 86.5 mm bottom bracket box.

To build a great monocoque carbon frame, we look for the perfect balance of stiffness, comfort and responsiveness at the lightest possible weight. Carbon fiber is an ideal material for bicycle frames because of its qualities of elasticity, capacity to withstand stresses, and its strength-to-weight ratio. The higher the modulus, the stiffer the composite. On the other end of the spectrum, the lower the modulus, the more elastic it will be. In the construction of the Cento1 Superleggera, we implemented MR60H for stiffness in the critical stress areas where lateral stiffness equates to greater efficiency. Then we used T800H and T700SC, with more elastic characteristics, to ensure comfort and sure-footed handling. Each was used as minimally as possible once our demanding strength and durability standards were met, ensuring the lightest weight frame possible.

Easy adjust

Wilier Triestina still insisted on a design that allowed for fine-tuning of rear wheel position and therefore of the cogset’s orientation in relation to the rear derailleur. This enables optimal wheel alignment, aerodynamic positioning and smooth shifting. Thanks to our innovative solution providing 6mm of adjustability, wheel base and distance from tire to the rear of our truncated seat tube airfoil are customizable. This enables both aerodynamic and bike handling optimizations, as well as making wheel changes fast and simple.

FSS

Floating Suspension System

In this system the shock absorber is not anchored directly onto the frame at a certain point, but floats between two links connecting the rear stays. This unusual design boosts pedal power (and therefore effectiveness when riding uphill) because it gives the bike a low bobbing level and a low pedal kick back. The perfect system for what we wanted to achieve! The utmost efficacy riding downhill and high pedal yield riding uphill, in or out of the saddle.

IF integrated fork

The handling of a Wilier bike is one of its most treasured attributes. We continually search for ways to further improve the solid feel at the front end, which has led to some of the most significant of the Cento1 SR’s enhancements. We found that a new way of positioning the down tube and top tube with respect to the head tube creates a virtual increase of the head tube’s height, which makes it 14% stiffer in terms of torsional rigidity. The top tube approaches the head tube at a downward angle while the down tube is angled upwards as it joins the head tube and the Integrated Fork. This junction is traditionally like the point of a triangle, but this new angle and positioning makes it more like a square, which is stiffer. The back of the fork’s brake hole is tucked into the down tube, keeping it clean and protected from the elements. The Integrated Fork design also creates an aerodynamic profile that reduces drag. Drawing from research implemented in development of our Twin Blade, the Cento1 SR’s fork legs are designed for optimal stability and aerodynamics. Like the proven Kamm truncated tail concept implemented in our time trial models, both the Cento1 SR’s integrated seatmast and fork legs benefit from this structural innovation, thereby attaining a perfect balance of lightweight, aerodynamics and steerability.

Integrated drop out

Seamless construction that does away with joints, glues and bolts. The dropouts are part of the unified rear triangle and an essential component of the carbon monocoque frame mold. As part of the continuous seat and chainstays, the angles of this area of the frame structure have been relaxed to dissipate road vibrations and improve comfort as well as handling.

Integrated seatpost concept

We believe that a bicycle targeted to professionals should offer the best performances from every standpoint. An integrated seatpost allows the frame to achieve these peak performances, by supplying an ideal balance of mechanical operations, weight and comfort. Cento1 SR’s new integrated seatpost also offers improved aerodynamics thanks to the special truncated tail design.

LIT

We’ve also leveraged LIT (Large Inflation Tube) technology in the making of the Cento1 Superleggera. Our prepreg carbons benefit from even higher and more uniform compaction through the use of industrial, high pressure bladders. The bladders expand from within the frame’s tubing, pushing against the inner walls of the tubes as the frame mould exerts opposing pressure from the outside. The combined compaction- forces result in a precision, lower-void construction and consistent wall thickness of the tubes throughout the frame’s construction. More traditional carbon manufacturing processes fail to optimally compact a composite, resulting in varied wall thicknesses, or voids (undesirable resin deposits), along a frame’s tubing that compromise structural integrity. That could translate into reduced longevity and strength. So the advantages of the Cento1 SL’s construction are obvious: increased capacity to handle stresses, optimal torsional stiffness, and unparalleled responsiveness.

The Razor Edge Design overlaps top and down tube at at the head tube to form a single, integrated and reinforced unit. Combined with the unique lines of the specially structured fork, we’ve optimized lateral stiffness and front end stability for quick accelerations as well as smooth, precise handling speed.

SEI special elastic infiltra

Zero.7 marks the implementation of an exclusive new Wilier Triestina technology: S.E.I. Film (Special Elastic Infiltrated). The injection of a proprietary viscoelastic film between layers of carbon increases vibration absorption and impact resistance, therefore making the frame safer and more comfortable. This new material has already been widely tested in the aeronautical and automotive industries with excellent results. It is now being applied in the construction of bicycles for the first time.

Swing arm integrated design

Our unique rear triangle concept has been influenced in part by advanced motorcycle design. We have created a seamless, integrated monocoque unit that unifies seat and chainstays,as well as all-carbon dropouts, for more immediate power transfer and superb handling.

What we commonly refer to as “carbon” is actually a composite of fibers and epoxy resin. The resin’s function is to join and bond the fibers, as well as protect the overall structure from external forces. In order to avoid potential points of weakness that could result from micro-gaps in a composite layup, we’ve implemented an ultra low density nanoparticle Zinc Oxide (“ZnO”) resin. This results in a stronger composite with higher resistance to impact while enabling us to reduce the weight of our frames due to its superior structural integrity. What this means out on the road is improved durability and amazingly responsive handling - the hallmark of our frames.
